The Capstone Project: IS 498 The capstone project is to be completed with the guidance of a three-person committee composed of the student's academic advisor, an expert representative in the specialization (either internal or external to SDSM&T), and an IS representative. The student selects the expert rep and the IS rep in consultation with the academic advisor. Neither family members nor friends of the student can serve as committee members.

The capstone project is a semester-long process that includes both a written component and an oral presentation/final defense. All capstone projects are taken for 3 semester credits. The student is expected to show a minimum of 135 hours of effort in completion of the project, including a 25-30 page paper. In determining the final grade, the capstone committee will consider all aspects of the project.
Submission of IS 498 Contract: The student must complete and submit an IS 498 Contract by the last day of classes in the semester preceding his/her IS 498 semester. All members of the student's IS committee must approve and sign the contract. The capstone must be appropriate to the student's career goals and coursework and must reflect the specific focus of the chosen specialization.
Registration for IS 498: When the IS 498 contract has been approved and submited and IS 401 has been completed, the student will need to complete a Permission of Instructor form, signed by the academic advisor. When the signed form is submitted to AES, the registration officer will create a "section" of IS 498 for the academic advisor, who will be the instructor of record and will be responsible for submitting the final grade.
